Risk-Based Framework
The AI Act categorises AI systems by risk level: unacceptable risk (prohibited), high risk (strict requirements), limited risk (transparency), and minimal risk (general guidance).
High-Risk AI Systems
High-risk systems include those used in employment, education, critical infrastructure, law enforcement, access to services, and certain biometric applications.
Prohibited Practices
Certain AI practices are prohibited entirely: social scoring by public authorities, real-time remote biometric identification in public spaces (with narrow exceptions), and manipulation of vulnerable groups.
General Purpose AI
The AI Act includes specific provisions for GPAI models (like large language models), with transparency and safety requirements for models of significant capability.
Phased Application
The AI Act entered into force on 1 August 2024. Most obligations apply gradually — prohibited practices from early 2025, high-risk system rules from 2026, and full application by August 2027.
